2018 repress coming in! finally - the great new cleric release arrives! solid, dry club techno with 2 locked grooves to boot. london based artist cleric originally started sending us over material a couple of years back. as his sound developed and improved more scope was created to start looking at putting together his debut first release on eartoground. we feel this is his best release to date and have very much enjoyed putting it together.

berlin native florian kruse has been a key part of the underground house and tech house scene for years now, and his productions have rightfully been bringing him plaudits for their emotional maturity. finding a kindred spirit in german vocalist hendrik burkhard, as theground the pair have crafted a killer new album - dediction, including these four exceptional tracks that will appear on the vinyl edition dediction ep. homeless hearts exemplifies the duo’s effect on each other - the slick, nuanced and spacy production gives way to a powerful groove, providing the perfect backing for burkhards dreamy vocal. undercover is a clear dance-floor killer, with kruses exceptional flair for programming meeting burkhard’s understated delivery. co-written by raphael hofmann silence explores some melancholic terrain before finding its way back to the floor via kruses & burkhards lush production. the ep is concluded with creature - featuring a thick growling bass and precise, arpeggiated synth lines that cut through the mix like lasers.

the story of the great roots reggae harmony trio black uhuru is one defined by many unexpected twists and turns. in its best known form, led by michael rose and with founding member duckie simpson and the black american female vocalist, puma jones, the group would enjoy the greatest popularity of any act in the wake of bob marley’s untimely death in 1981, but the origins of the group lay in the turbulent waterhouse district during the mid-1970s. duckie first formed the group as uhuru, the swahili word for unity, with garth dennis as lead singer and don carlos to join him in harmony, after cutting an adaptation of the impressions’ “romancing to the folk song” at dynamics, “time is on our side” at randy’s for clive chin, and “slow coach” for raymond “benno” anderson, dennis drifted into the wailing souls and don carlos went solo, leading duckie to recruit rising waterhouse vocalist michael “tony” rose as lead singer, and errol nelson from the jays for harmony. their debut album, love crisis, was produced, voiced and mixed at king tubby’s studio by prince jammy and remains and outstanding example of jammy’s roots reggae production phase. the song “hard ground” vamps on a similar theme to marley’s “talking blues”: rose sings of a life of everyday hardship, with destitution and homelessness the pervading factors. on the extended dub portion and dub the instrumental cuts that follow the alternate vocal take of this enthralling 12-inch ep, you can hear the non-standard instrumentation that helps make the work so innovative, with winston wright’s harpsichord melody emphasising the hopelessness of rose’s emotive lyrics, the commanding rhythm and understated bass and guitar from robbie shakespeare and chinna smith completing the picture.

music is love boss returns to his home label after a few brief excursions on hot creations & viva music last year, and he returns in style. 3 summer time slammers and a stellar remix from the mak & pasteman boys. middle ground is a dusty filtered house track, aligned with a soaring string section, which narrate the warm uplifting journey this track lays down. mandingo was made as a tool for oli’s sets last summer and after some huge reactions and some serious demand, mandingo was set for a vinyl release. big stabs and plenty of funk - this track is party ready. on the flip we find mak & pasteman return to music is love after an appearance on the 3rd lovebox va in 2016. piano4 is flipped into what these boys do best, simple stripped back grooves delivered with stupendous power. on b2 is the original take on piano4 which sees oli flexing his power house muscles on this big piano track. piano4 is an unrelenting beast that twists and turns its way through various passages of maximum intent.

when promoting the release of figure-ground’s ‘ep 5’, released december 2016 it was finally announced that the previously anonymous modular duo were in fact dronelock’s alexander church and boris brenecki from ontal. so now the cat’s out of the bag it seems fitting that figure-ground should have this outing on the dronelock / ontal co-run label, shadow story. add to that a collaboration with one of the uk’s finest electronic artists and figure-ground fan, paul mac and you know you’re set for some beautifully worked productions from this trio of talent. teasing and playing with the hardware throughout the ep, they’ve stayed within the realms of techno to create mind-melting and dance floor devastation across 6 tracks. from ‘virtues values & venom’ itself that opens with gusto, before erratic beat experimentation on ‘eightfold path’, the frenetic ‘digital dialectic’, which also gets a second more staccato outing on version 2, ‘noble habitus’ with its machine-funk to the subterranean ‘nativism’, it’s obviously been an enjoyable ride and that translates to the listener.
